What is pigmentation really?
If we want to delve into the biology of our skin, pigmentation is created by a substance called melanin. Our body produces more melanin when there are higher levels of the melanocyte-inducing hormone in response to prolonged exposure to the sun.
However, there is a reason we need melanin: it absorbs the harmful UV rays that the sun inflicts and protects us against cellular damage so that we don’t get sun damage the moment we step outside.
So you might be wondering,
“Okay, I need it to survive. But how does pigmentation come up so fast? and “Am I able to slow it down/reverse the darkening effect?”
This darkening of the skin process is catalysed by an enzyme called tyrosinase. You might hear the term “tyrosinase inhibitors” a lot in the clinic and there’s a special reason for it. Tyrosinase inhibitors aim to stop the enzyme responsible for the darkening effect.
Our skincare line, dr. dream contains active ingredients including tyrosinase inhibitors to help clients target pigmentation. Our goal is to delve deeper and stop the body from creating the problem in a safe and sustainable way, rather than just treating pigmentation from the surface.
